Our Family
For me (Jamie), it’s “peas and carrots.” For Mark, my husband, it’s “meat and potatoes.”
He uses an oven to heat metal. I use it to bake cookies. He uses a burner to solder wires. I use it to warm hot cocoa. He uses a funnel to pour engine oil into a jerry can. I use it to pour syrup into a bottle. He uses a clothesline to hang freshly painted stool legs. I use it to hang clothes. He uses oregano to rig a leaky radiator. I use it to add flavor to my favorite Italian dish…
Since we’ve been married I’ve grown accustomed to speaking in terms of “angle iron” and “welding rods.” I can use pliers to twist wire to a fence post, use a router to engrave a piece of wood, and sew a tarp to make a cover for a generator. Mark has learned to speak in terms of “magenta” and “taupe.” He can tie ribbons, decorate a Christmas tree, and build a recipe box.
And we both love to sit on the porch in the evenings enjoying the cool breeze that graces Konge Hill as we share a meal and overlook Lake Victoria. We run into the rising sun about every other morning and greet the children as they make their trek to school. Every third night we sit by candlelight and talk about the day that passed and the one to come. Occasionally we go on a date to a small gelatto stand and buy a cup of ice cream for less than $1.
Mark is a carpenter by profession, and I’m a teacher. And we’ve been blessed to use our skills across the world from where we grew up. It is the Lord who has led us here…
On our Long Journey.
